Criminal Investigation Unit
The unit is currently composed of one captain, one senior investigator, and five investigators. Current staffing levels have allowed for an investigator to be on duty seven days per week and on call 24 hours per day.
This year the unit continued to be actively involved with the Albany County Crime Analysis Center allowing for the unit Field Intelligence Officer to be assigned to the center on a full time basis. The Albany Crime Analysis Center or "CAC" as it is often referred to has created a conduit for valuable intelligence information from within the Albany County Correctional Facility as well as from outside sources to be provided to regional law enforcement agencies on a broad spectrum of issues including but not limited to homicides, illegal firearms, narcotics trafficking, and gang activity. This program has had the additional benefit of allowing federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies real time access to information that may be crucial to their ongoing investigations. Through daily debriefings, targeted inmate monitoring, and the development of confidential informants, the unit is often able to shore up a criminal case that is in jeopardy or help to make a good case an excellent one from a prosecution standpoint.
