County Executive to Honor High School Sectional Achievement During “Week of Champions”

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy will honor athletes at area high schools throughout Albany County as part of his “Week of Champions” tour. The autumn sports season proved to be quite successful for local schools as Bethlehem’s girls’ soccer, Christian Brothers Academy boys’ soccer, Academy of the Holy Names girls’ soccer, both the Shaker boys’ football and girls’ tennis, and Voorheesville Girls’ Volleyball teams went on to big sectional titles.

Beginning next week on January 15, the County Executive will personally visit each team to congratulate players and coaches whose athletic accomplishments merit recognition for achievement, dedication and excellence and serve as inspiration to others throughout the region.

The schedule and locations for Champions’ Week is as follows:

Tuesday, January 15 (POSTPONED) – Bethlehem Central High School, 700 Delaware Avenue, Delmar, NY 12054
The week begins with an event at Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar, NY honoring the girls’ varsity soccer team. The top-seeded Eagles won the NY State High School Athletic Association Section II, Class AA title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Shenendehowa at Stillwater High School.

Wednesday, January 16 at 10am – Academy of the Holy Names, 1075 New Scotland Road, Albany, NY 12208
This year, the Holy Names girls’ soccer team will be honored by the County Executive for their hard fought Section II, Class B championship win over Schalmont. The game ended a single loss season with a double overtime game to secure the Holy Names girls’ victory over the defending 3 time consecutive champions.

Thursday, January 17 at 3pm – Christian Brothers Academy, Alumni Library, 12 Airline Drive, Albany, NY 12205
The next stop will be the Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, where the County Executive will honor the boys’ soccer team for winning the Section II, Class AA title. The team had an impressive season and carrying a 23 win season at the end of the year.

Thursday, January 17 at 7pm – Town of Colonie Memorial Town Hall, 534 Loudon Road, Latham, NY 12110
Shaker High had two Sectional II, Class AA title champions this fall, with boys’ football and girls’ tennis teams each securing victories. The Bison ended their both impressive football and tennis seasons being undefeated in their leagues.

Friday, January 18 at 10am – Voorheesville Clayton A. Bouton High School, 432 New Salem Road, Voorheesville, NY 12186
The County Executive will honor the Voorheesville girls’ Volleyball team for their Section II, Class C championship win. The Blackbirds won the regional finals with a 3-1 victory over Canton High School at home.
