Local Hero Anthony F. Schmitz to be Recognized at Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony

A local veteran who has been recognized internationally and awarded with outstanding service to his community will be honored by the Albany County Veterans Bureau Monday, October 1, 2018 at 8:30am. Anthony F. Schmitz will be named Albany County’s October Honor-A-Veteran by Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy at the ceremony at North Albany American Legion Post #1610, 35 North First Street, Albany, NY, 12004. 

Schmitz enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and earned many medals and commendations including the Bronze Star Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre. He was awarded France’s most prestigious decoration, the Legion of Honor.

Schmitz graduated from Siena College, worked as a postal clerk for USPS, and was a caseworker for the Albany County Department of Social Services.
