County Executive McCoy Announces International Ranking for TU Center

July 02, 2019

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today announced the latest accolade for the Times Union Center – the #52 spot on Pollstar’s Top 200 Arena Venues around the world. The ranking is based on ticket sales for the first half of 2019, putting Albany County’s newly renovated facility ahead of the Toyota Center in Houston, the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and the TD Garden in Boston, among others.

The Times Union Center sold an astounding 190,769 tickets so far this year, a breakneck pace when compared to previous years. Through May of 2019, the county-owned facility has brought in a total net income of more than $1.64 million that will help fund critical programs and services that improve the lives of local residents.

“When we renovated our Times Union Center, we were also investing in the entire Downtown Albany community and Albany County as a whole, and seeing this ranking shows our investment is paying dividends,” said County Executive McCoy. “Our arena has steadily risen through this list over the years, and with even more great musical acts and sporting events like the Aurora Games ahead, I’m looking forward to breaking into the Top 50 by year’s end.”

“We are thrilled to be ranked #52 in Pollstar’s Top 200 Arenas. This ranking wouldn’t be possible without SMG and their ability to drive major events into Albany, as well as Albany County’s commitment to the building and the investments to renovate the building. This investment has helped enable Albany to compete with the major markets for both concerts and NCAA events,” said SMG General Manager Bob Belber.

In December of last year, County Executive McCoy announced the Times Union Center earned the “Comeback Building of the Year” Award from the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) for its recent revitalization. Last month, the county-owned arena was also presented with the 2019 Prime Site Award by Facilities Magazine. This is the16th time that it has earned the prestigious honor.
