County Executive McCoy Announces Veteran Services Coming to Westerlo Ahead of Memorial Day

May 14, 2019

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy announced today that the Albany County Veterans Service Bureau (VSB) will be in Westerlo weekly to help even more of our former military personnel apply for their earned benefits.

Every Tuesday from 9:30 to 11:30am, local veterans and their dependents can go to the Westerlo Reformed Church for help with filing claims, obtaining documents and determining eligibility for medical care, disability and compensation, pensions, education benefits, property tax exemptions, small business loans and VA home loans. The church is located at 564 State Route 143 in Westerlo; no appointments are necessary.

“As a veteran and Army Reservist, connecting those who have risked their lives to serve with the services they’ve earned has always been a passion of mine. While our VSB is always available at the Albany office to help the more than 20,000 veterans in the County, and in Berne on Tuesdays, we’re taking this important step to make the entire process as convenient and close to home as possible,” said County Executive McCoy.

“Looking ahead to Memorial Day celebrations, I can’t think of a better way to honor our veterans than by expanding our services and helping residents navigate the complexities of some of these government programs. Walk-ins are welcome,” he continued.

Veterans living in the Hilltowns also have the opportunity to get assistance at the Albany County Center for Essential Supportive Services (ACCESS) Hilltowns Office where a representative from the Veterans Service Bureau is available on Tuesdays between 12:30pm and 2:30pm. The office is located at 1360 Helderberg Trail (Route 443) in Berne.

Former military personnel and their families also have the opportunity to learn about some of the initiatives Albany County specifically has to offer, including Return the FAVOR (Find and Assist Veterans of Record), which provides discounts to eligible vets at participating businesses; Honor-A-Vet; and the Veterans Miracle Center.
