Statement from County Executive McCoy on the Supreme Court’s Decision to Block the Census 2020 Citizenship Question

Posted: Thursday, June 27, 2019 4:18 PM

“In April, I signed Albany County onto the bipartisan lawsuit challenging the inclusion of a citizen question in next year’s census, because I knew literally hundreds of billions of federal dollars for local governments was on the line for critical health, education, crime victims and infrastructure programs,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.

“Requiring immigrants to list their citizenship status is nothing more than a veiled attempt to suppress their participation and would ultimately weaken the Congressional representation of states like New York. Today’s Supreme Court decision is a true victory in our fight and we will continue to work within our community to ensure as many residents are counted as possible and fairly represented in the 2020 census.”
