County Executive McCoy Statement on Signing of Local Law P

Posted: Monday, November 6, 2017 2:30 PM

By signing this local law, Albany County once again shows that we are a leader in working to address the age and gender gap by prohibiting employers from seeking or requiring a prospective employee’s wage history. In too many cases, salary offers are based on prior wages and not the responsibilities of the position sought. It is unacceptable that even today we are still fighting for equal pay for equal work for people in the job market. It is well documented that women and people of color are frequently paid less for the same work as their white, male counterparts. This new law will help address the wage gap between men and women by prohibiting employers from requiring applicants to provide prior or current salary before offering them employment.
