Derailment in Virginia/Governor’s Call for Federal Action Raise Awareness of Albany County’s Moratorium

4/30/2014 4:42:58 PM

Statement from County Executive Daniel P. McCoy

“The news of today’s rail accident in Lynchburg, VA, shows that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking decisive action to protect the public and provides reinforcement for what Albany County is doing to study crude oil shipping in our community. The Governor has called on the federal government to take action immediately to strengthen the regulation of crude oil transport. Here in Albany County we are facing similar challenges and that is why I want to ensure we have all the information to make a determination on the processing of crude at the Port of Albany. It’s fortunate that at this point there were no injuries reported in Virginia, but news reports indicate that rail cars are leaking into the James River there, which will pose an additional threat once the fires are put out. Again, the action we are taking in Albany County would consider all the risks to the public and would provide us with a road map to work with first responders, health officials and other entities to respond to a disaster and ensure that we have done all we can to prepare. Given what we’ve seen today, it’s not a matter for discussion; it is time for action.”
