Court Advocate Volunteer

For information about the next training class for Court Advocate Volunteers, contact Debra Schramek, Volunteer Coordinator, at 447-7100, or by e-mail: cvsvc@albanycounty.com.

The Center's Crime Victim Assistance Program trains volunteers in the workings of the criminal justice system and the emotional issues surrounding victimization. Volunteers will learn how to provide emotional support and victim advocacy in a courtroom setting.

Training is held two times a year, and involves six two-hour sessions, one or two nights a week.  Topics include the court system in New York State, domestic violence, homicide, assault and other types of violent crime, and advocacy skills. A screening interview is required before being accepted into the training program.

Upon completion of training, the volunteer will shadow a staff person in court several times until ready to be assigned his or her own schedule.

Most courts meet during the day, therefore daytime availability is preferred.

Volunteers are required to meet with staff on the first Tuesday evening of every month for supervision, case debriefing and in-service training.
