Albany County encourages all residents to keep one number by their phones for help during Hurricane Sandy and afterwards. That number is 2-1-1. Dial that from your home phone or cell phone. Three numbers to get the information you need on shelter sites (if necessary), power outage numbers for National Grid and Central Hudson and all other health and human services questions.
United Way's 2-1-1 helpline offers caller's information and referrals to health and human services organizations most appropriate for their needs. Call specialists can communicate with callers in more than 250 languages. The line is available from 9:00am. to 7:00pm and are operating 24/7 during this storm.
2-1-1 is the number to dial for information pertaining to shelters, evacuation routes, road closures, recovery services, power outages, donations, volunteer opportunities, and other disaster-related services. Albany County Emergency Management and Albany County municipalities are providing that information directly to 2-1-1.
The helpline reduces caller anxiety and empowers people to take the appropriate steps and receive critical assistance by connecting them to the right service providers. This reduces non-emergency calls to 9-1-1, taking the burden off frontline response agencies that are focused on preserving life and property.
