Statement from Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy on Veto of Local Law K

Posted: Monday, November 5, 2018 5:15 PM

“While I commend the intent of Local Law K – the Fair Hotel Consumer Practices Law – I cannot sign legislation as drafted. As advised by the County Attorney, this law is overly vague and ambiguous and clarification is necessary to avoid frivolous lawsuits. The input we received from the public during our recent hearing convened on October 25 almost unanimously reinforced these concerns.

“Accordingly, while Local Law K is well intentioned, due to these flaws, I must veto the measure. I urge the Legislature to work with stakeholders in the business community and the County Attorney to determine if this law is necessary and if so, craft a piece of legislation that meets the needs of all those involved. This will allow us to ensure we are not putting an undue and potentially unfair burden on businesses that act as economic drivers for our community, provide jobs for hardworking residents and are an important source of revenue for vital programs and services.”
