County Executive Announces Initiative Under the Shared Services Equipment Plan

Posted: Friday, May 11, 2018 12:42 PM

A plan being launched by Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today could lead to significant taxpayer savings. In late 2017, the Albany County Shared Services Panel, chaired by the County Executive, unanimously adopted an Eight-Point Countywide Shared Services Plan that will make municipalities more efficient and less costly. In the months since the proposal was adopted, Albany County has taken a lead role in making it a reality.

The first initiative of the eight-point plan being announced today is a new Countywide Centralized Shared Equipment Program which could lead to $525,000 in savings each year. The program encourages additional equipment sharing among cities, towns, villages and school districts throughout Albany County. When municipalities are able to share specialty equipment rather than purchasing new equipment outright, savings are generated and taxpayers benefit.

“Reducing costs to taxpayers has always been a top priority of mine and this comprehensive proposal will build on our past successes,” said County Executive McCoy. “The sharing of equipment, everything from dump trucks to electric generators to air compressors, is the kind of fiscal responsibility Albany County needs. I look forward to working with our municipal leaders to see this plan through.”

Similar to the way you borrow books from your local library, the new online portal will make it easier for municipalities to share equipment by providing an interactive database of the items each municipality within the county has to share and which are currently available for use. Albany County has taken the lead on this initiative by making an inventory of 351 pieces of equipment available to municipalities.

The Countywide Centralized Shared Equipment Program will be followed by future initiatives supported by the Albany County Shared Services Panel that will streamline local government and drive down costs in areas like healthcare, energy production and vehicle maintenance.
