Albany County Honored by National Association of Counties for Driver Education Program

Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy today announced that Albany County has been honored with the National Association of Counties (NACo) 2018 Achievement Award in the category of Human Services for its “innovative and effective” Probation Driver’s Licensing Program.

Residents ordered by the court to serve terms of probation often face serious obstacles finding meaningful work – from employers unwilling to hire them because of their prior conviction, to court requirements that they remain within the county, to not having a driver’s license. By taking this program, probationers get assistance obtaining their driver’s license and this increases their chances of finding work in the future.

“I am proud to say that Albany County was the first municipality in New York to implement an educational program like this that is helping more people get back on their feet,” said County Executive McCoy. “I am honored that the Albany County Probation Driver’s Licensing Program is being recognized as a national leader in taking a proactive approach to eliminating obstacles that prevent probationers from successfully reintegrating into our communities.”

“Those convicted of crimes and sentenced to probation can often find themselves caught in an unfortunate cycle of recidivism that leads to future arrests,” said Albany County Department of Probation Director William Connors. “Our Probation Driver’s Licensing Program breaks that cycle and I thank County Executive McCoy for his leadership on this issue.”

Since its implementation in May of 2017, the program is already seeing early success with multiple individuals having found jobs that required a New York State driver’s license thereby avoiding potential subsequent incarceration.

NACo will present the award to Albany County at its 2018 Annual Conference and Exposition in Nashville, Tennessee on July 15.
