FREE Stroke Screening to Kick Off American Stroke Awareness Month

5.1.2014 @ 11:00 AM-2:00 PM | Cahill Room
Albany County Office Building
112 State Street
Albany, 12207

First, the grim statistics: Stroke kills 129,000 people per year. It’s the No. 1 cause of preventable disability each year. African-Americans have nearly twice the risk for a first-ever stroke than White Americans.

Now, some good news: 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

On Thursday, May 1, from 11:00am. to 2:00pm in the Cahill Auditorium of the Albany County Office Building at 112 State St., the American Heart and American Stroke Association, Albany County, and St. Peter’s Health Partners are teaming up to provide free stroke screenings to the general public.

“St. Peter’s medical professionals will offer a full lipid profile,” said Stephen Cameron, director of physician development at St. Peter’s Health Partners and a member of the Capital Region Advisory Board of the American Heart Association. “The screening includes cholesterol, glucose, HDL, LDL and triglycerides testing, and blood pressure testing. We can also offer pulmonary testing, a review of those numbers with our professionals, and people will leave with information they can then share with their doctors.”

“I hope everyone who works in downtown Albany – and who can get there – comes to this screening,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. “The County is proud to partner with the American Heart and Stroke Association and St. Peter’s Health Partners during May, which is American Stroke Month, to offer these free screenings. Knowledge is power, and if people know their risk, they can take the appropriate steps to live a long and healthy life.”
